Industry bodies estimate that the UK is short of about 100,000 HGV drivers – with gaps made worse by the coronavirus pandemic, tax changes and Brexit. There are some reports today stating that the government would consider having soldiers drive fuel tankers, in an emergency situation if this would help alleviate issues.
Logistics UK, which represents the haulage industry, said it was “aware of reports that petrol supplies are currently being affected” by the lack of drivers.
